Ford’s special vehicle team are known for some mad conversions, and the old F-150 Lightning with its bonkers supercharged V8 and street aspirations is a case in point. But now they have realised that trucks are meant to stay off road and married that bonkers engine mentality with some really off-road kit to make the Ford SVT Raptor. Recently released with an even bigger engine, this beast sports a 6.2l V8 putting out 414hp. While this doesn’t make performance comparable to on-road speed demons, 0-62 in 7 seconds and as much torque as a 911 turbo makes it one of the fastest things you can take through a desert without bothering too much about being broken by the scenery.

Fitted with Fox racing shocks all round with 11 inch travel in front and 14 inches out back, electronically switchable four wheel drive, 35″ all terrain tyres, and that engine this is a truck you can enter almost unmodified in any desert race. And that gives it the cool the Lightning lacked and a firm place in my dream garage.

Ever since the current BMW M3 came out in 2007 the fans of Bavaria’s finest have been waiting with baited breath for a CSL version to surpass that of the previous generation. Well that wait may well be over, as BMW today announced the BMW M3 GTS – a production version of the FIA spec GT race car unveiled earlier this year.

The eye-searing orange paintjob is a throwback to BMW’s racing history, but once you get past the colour (and the white one in the gallery caught testing at the Nürburgring looks much more palatable) you realise there are a myriad of changes to the car. There are new carbon fibre splitters front and rear, an all new titanium exhaust system, a giant adjustable wing at the rear, massive 6 pot brakes up front and 4 pot brakes out back – in itself a massive departure for the M team – and an interior stripped of almost every luxury and fitted with a roll cage and racing seats. The weight loss program brings results – even with all the racing trimmings the GTS weighs in at over 200kgs less than the standard car.

Performance hasn’t been released yet but it seems fair to surmise that the already excellent V8 will be enlarged to 4.4 litres and massaged to produce around 450hp, delivered through the 7-speed dual clutch box.

This car should take any pre conceived notion of what a M3 is and toss them out the window – any slurs about softening over the years will be lost on the razor sharp purpose of this car. I will make it my mission to one day try one on the Nordschleife.

Proving that Danish design doesn’t just extend to your next piece of furniture, Zenvo Automotive have brought out the ST1 – Denmark’s first supercar. And what a debut – with turbo and supercharged 7.0 litre V8 the ST1 has powered itself firmly into supercar territory with an incredible 1,104hp and 1,430NM of torque. First performance tested last year, this powerhouse makes 0-62mph in a tyre melting 3.2s on its way to a top speed of 233mph.

The design is the real star though, and enough to sell the car on its own merits – with a really aggressive and angular look giving the car real purpose, and fantastic attention to detail. You would certainly move over if one of these bore down on you!

Started way back in 2004, Zenvo are planning to deliver its first cars in the coming months, the production run will be limited to 15 per year, and they are all hand built entirely in Denmark.

SEMA season is almost upon us – that time of year when all the customisation nuts make their annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas for the Special Equipment Marketing Association show where all the aftermarket tuners and customisers show off their skills – and their products.

Saleen is one of the few to have had full OEM status, not just tuning cars but rebuilding them as new cars, so it’s always interesting to see what they come up with. And this year their star is the 2010 Mustang based S281. This heavily modified Ford takes the best of Saleen’s styling cues and legacy and applies it to the latest incarnation of the Mustang – and the combination is explosive. With a really clean and flowing look, this car looks like to no other aftermarket special, and brings a while new level of class and style to the Mustang shape.

Although the ubiquitous Porsche 911 doesn’t usually get me excited, this special edition stunner has got me all aflutter. Finally Porsche have produced a car that marries their legendary build quality and drive with some real sex appeal.

Inspired by the classic 1972 Carrera 2.7 RS, and built to show off Stuttgart’s customisation division, the 911 Sport Classic takes the formulaic look of the 911 to the next level. Porsche have added a double-bubble roof, fuchs-style wheels, wider rear fenders and the iconic ducktail spoiler to complete that classic look, fettled with the engine to coax a little more power out of the otherwise standard 3.8 Carrera S engine, lowered the suspension and fitted the sports pack, and included the excellent carbon ceramic brakes as standard. But the changes haven’t stopped there – the interior gets a dash of pixie dust too with espresso leather and innovative woven leather/yarn on the seats.

Thus the Sport Classic has taken the best 911 – the carrera S – and improved on it in every way. This is the only Porsche I’ve ever actually wanted.

Founded in 1947, Veritas was for a brief period a legend in motorsports, but folded in 1952 after only 3 years production of road cars. After a hiatus of over 50 years it is being resurrected – and how. First spotted secretly testing on the Nürburgring in 2008, and launched at this year’s Salon Privé in London the Veritas RS III looks set to be one of the best supercars this side of the Bugatti Veyron.

Starting with a tubular steel chassis clothed in absolutely stunning carbon/kevlar body work, Ohlins suspension, six-piston race spec brakes in front and four piston stoppers out back the Veritas comes with a choice of BMW engines – just like the originals. The basic engine is a 480hp V8, capable of propelling this lightweight car to 62mph in 3.6 seconds before topping out at 204mph. The bonkers option is a modified 5 litre V10 from the M5 – producing 600hp and capable of powering to 62mph in a staggering 3.2 seconds before storming off towards the horizon and 215mph. This may be when you start realising that the achingly beautiful car doesn’t have a windshield.

The new Veritas will be campaigning in 24-hour endurance races and will most likely find its home as an ultra exclusive track day special – only 30 will be made in a year.

To celebrate 25 years of the M5, BMW have built a special one-off custom, “the M5 CSL we never built” according to Albert Biermann, head of BMW’s M division. With a heavily modified version of the award winning V10 – stroked to 5.5l, fitted with a carbon fiber intake and a secondary oil cooler this beast produces 580hp – an increase of 76hp over the stock model. To keep the power in check a new version of the 7 speed dual-clutch box fitted to the M3 has been fitted. Add a carbon fiber roof to lower the centre of gravity, lightweight carbon fiber seats and rip out the rear seats and the car has shed over 50 kilos. The upshot is that the M5 CSL lops a whopping 20 seconds off the stock car’s Nürburgring lap time.

While it is a tour de force technologically sadly we will never be able to buy this car – it is strictly a one off and with all the compromises – what is the point of the world’s fastest four-door saloon if there aren’t any back seats? – it’s probably for the best. If you want a track day special, an M5 isn’t going to be it.

The Mazda MX-5 is one of the quintessential sports cars of the last two decades. It may not be the ultimate speedster but it is consistently ranked among the top sports cars for pure driveability.

And now, after 20 years, Mazda are refining the idea further with this special edition Superlight. The concept is simple – take an already great car and strip everything that isn’t strictly necessary out to save weight and improve handling and efficiency. Rip out the heater, the stereo and even the windscreen and the basic form stands proud. Top it off with a generous helping of retro tan leather on the seats, dash and steering wheel and the result is just stunning.

The engineers didn’t stop there though – they tweaked the intake and fitted a sportier exhaust, and improved the brakes and suspension. The stock 125hp engine won’t thrill you but if you’re looking at the 0-60 time you’re missing the point. The MX-5 Superlight is all about driving feel – and an incredible 37mpg. You can’t have this much fun for that mpg in anything else.

Sadly this gorgeous piece of kit is only a concept for the moment – but we can only hope Mazda build it – and bring back Colin Chapman’s legacy of light, nimble and feelsome sports cars.

The Holland & Holland Range Rover was conceived with a single intention: to create the ultimate all purpose, all season, luxury supercar for the discerning few. Designers and engineers at both Holland & Holland and Overfinch have worked together to create a car that embodies Holland & Holland’s unique sporting heritage and Overfinch’s bespoke craftsmanship. The result is a quintessentially English take on motoring luxury.

Based on either the 5.0 litre 503 bhp Supercharged or TDV8 versions of the new 2010 MY car, the Holland & Holland Overfinch features a raft of enhancements that make it unmistakably something very special. On the outside, it has discreet but effective styling changes manufactured from OEM grade thermoplastic polymers, which give unsurpassed quality and durability. Bodywork is painted in one of four unique exterior paint colours, including Holland & Holland Tintern Green. Two-tone paintwork, similar to that of a Rolls-Royce Phantom, is also available, as is black. Overfinch’s craftsmen take 130 man hours to paint and hand-polish the car, which gives a depth of colour and quality of finish that marks it out from its mass-produced brethren from a hundred yards. Orange peel, the cellulite-like effect that is visible on many cars considerably more expensive than this one, is banished by Overfinch craftsmen’s skill and hard work. The effect is completed by Overfinch’s iconic 20″ Tiger wheels (fitted with all season Mud & Snow tyres) and special cast exhaust outlets. A choice of 22″ wheels is an optionfor those not intending to venture off road, or for those who also possess a winter set.

But it is on the inside that the designers have really excelled themselves. Eight of Europe’s finest hides, of a grade so fine it is only normally used in private jets, dyed in seven exclusive tones, are used to create a cabin of rare luxury. Professionals from both Overfinch and Holland & Holland have worked closely with a colour and trim specialist to ensure that interiors and exteriors complement one another perfectly. A unique trim style covers the seats, doors, upper and lower dash board, centre and rear consoles and even the cubby box lid, which is both cleanly elegant in style and fiendishly expensive in
terms of both labour and materials. Not for this car simple contrasting piping-the Holland & Holland Overfinch, even the contrasting colour signature stripes are cut from individual hides and trimmed to sit nearly flush with the leather surrounding them. As a result, it takes over 150 man hours just to trim the car. If the optional aviation-style quilted leather or Alcantara headlining is selected, it takes even longer.

The thirty one piece wood veneer kit blends seamlessly into the design of the rest of the car, including that of the gun cabinet and rear console. There is the choice of Olive Ash Gloss, European Burr Walnut with special diamond pattern inlay, Matt Gunstock Walnut and Piano Black Lacquer with silver inlays.

Only one hundred Holland & Holland Overfinches will be produced each year, and every one will be fitted with a special shotgun grade steel plaque, which features Holland & Holland’s trademark diamond inserts and “Royal” scroll engraving,hand-made by Holland & Holland’s craftsmen at their Harrow Road factory. The steering wheel has been designed especially for the vehicle too, with a special ergonomic grip and steel inserts, decorated with a design to match the Holland & Holland engraving, or even that of a customer’s own shotgun.

All Holland & Holland Overfinch vehicles will be strict four-seaters as the cars feature a unique centre console, which fits between the individual rear seats. Hand-veneered to match the rest of the car, it has an integrated refrigerator at floor level, large enough for a couple of full size bottles, which can be cold enough to hold an ice bucket. It also has a storage compartment, which could contain controls for the rear entertainment, a power inverter for a laptop and a Holland & Holland game book as well as Holland & Holland crystal tumblers and champagne flutes.

In the boot is a bespoke gun cabinet, hand-crafted in veneers to match the woodwork across the rest of the interior. Although it is itself removable for when more luggage carrying capacity is required, it is locked to the boot floor for security and safety. It has three drawers, fitted to carry eight further matching Holland & Holland crystal tumblers and flutes, customers’ own shotguns, a cleaning kit for them as well as cartridges and the bag in which to carry them. Additional drawers are available with alternative interiors so that, between the end of one shooting season and the beginning of the next, it can serve whatever purpose the vehicle’s owner requires, from a picnic at Ascot to an evening at Glyndebourne.

Contained within both the gun cabinet and the refrigerator in the centre console is room for six bottles and it is for these that the car will feature the world’s first self-replenishing cocktail cabinet. All cars sold in Europe will arrive from the factory ull of Pol Roger Champagne, The Balvenie single malt whisky, Hendrick’s single batch gin, Ivan the Terrible luxury vodka and Willow Spring Water from the Lake District. During the first year regular refills will be dispatched to the owners of the car to make sure that its passengers don’t go thirsty.

Daryl Greatrex, Managing Director of Holland & Holland, said, “Holland & Holland is globally synonymous with both luxury and supreme functionality. To look at, to handle and to shoot with a Holland & Holland is to appreciate 174 years of using the best craftsmanship and technology to make things work supremely well and look even better. It’s ten years since we had a Holland & Holland Range Rover and we decided that working with Overfinch was the only way to do it this time. Over the years it has become clear that what AMG is to Mercedes and Alpina is to BMW, so Overfinch is to Range Rover.”

Neil Underwood, Chief Operating Officer of Overfinch added, “There has always been a great deal of talk in the media speculating that Range Rovers could start approaching Bentley levels of luxury. For one hundred fortunate customers, that will now become a reality. Our designers and engineers have worked closely with the quite astonishing craftsmen of Holland & Holland to create the most exclusive, most luxurious off-roader ever built.”

For all those petrolheads who are feeling squeezed off of the public roads by congested traffic, taxes and speed cameras there are still a few places to escape to. One of the finest is Goodwood Motor Circuit, and while most have probably heard of the Goodwood Revival and the Goodwood Festival of Speed, you may not have heard of the Goodwood Breakfast Club.

Every first Sunday of the month a themed gathering of cars is let on to the hallowed circuit and spectators are free to come and enjoy the cars – and a hearty breakfast. With themes ranging from soft top to modified there is truly something for everyone.

Having just tested a few of the surrounding roads, I can heartily recommend trying the A272 from Petersfield to Billinghurst, and the A285 from Petworth followed by a right on to Selhurstpark Road to get you to Goodwood.
